Module 3

The Golden Rule of Habit Change

You can't erase a habit. You can only replace it.

🧠 Cue-Routine-Reward Rewire🧠 Belief & Community

The big idea

The single most important idea in the whole course: habits can’t be erased, only replaced. Neuroscience is blunt about it — a habit loop gets wired into your brain and it doesn’t un-wire. That’s not bad news. It’s the strategy: don’t fight the loop, use it.

The Golden Rule: to change a habit, keep the old cue, deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine.

You keep the trigger (the cue). You keep the payoff (the reward your brain actually craves). Only the middle step — the behavior — changes. That’s why fad habit-killers fail: they try to remove the cue and the reward too, which leaves the craving unfulfilled and the brain feeling cheated. The loop comes roaring back.

And one more layer: a change sticks faster and survives longer when you believe it’s possible — and belief is often something you borrow from a group until it becomes yours.

✍️ Writing prompts

Beginner — Name your swap. Pick one habit you want to change (not delete). Write the old cue, the old reward, and one replacement routine that could sit between them and still deliver the reward. Three lines. Principle tested: Cue-Routine-Reward Rewire.

Intermediate — The replacement report. Do the beginner swap for real for 3 days. Notice what resists: does the new routine actually deliver the same reward, or does the old routine sneak back in? Write a short honest report of what worked, what slipped, and why the old loop fought back. Principle tested: Cue-Routine-Reward Rewire.

Advanced — The moat of belief. Change rarely holds alone. Audit your environment: who or what would reinforce your new routine, and what’s silently reinforcing the old one? Design one concrete way to borrow belief — a group, an accountability person, a visible reminder — and write exactly when and how you’ll use it. Principle tested: Belief & Community.

🏁 Weekend exercise

The Rewrite. Take the habit you’ve been circling all week and do a full Golden Rule rewrite on paper: CUE ____ → NEW ROUTINE ____ → REWARD ____. Force yourself to write a realistic replacement routine — one you can actually do in the moment, not the ideal version. Then post your rewrite where you (and ideally one person who knows you’re doing this) will see it daily. The rewrite is the plan; the visibility is the belief.
