Keystone Habits and Willpower
One small habit can tip the whole day.
The big idea
Not all habits are equal. A keystone habit is one whose change starts a chain reaction — fixing it quietly improves habits that seem completely unrelated. Getting enough sleep, making your bed, a consistent morning routine: these are often keystones because they reset dozens of small decisions downstream.
The other pillar is willpower — and the uncomfortable truth is it’s a muscle. It gets tired as it works, leaving less for everything else that day. That’s why relying on willpower to be heroic at 7pm usually fails: you’ve already spent the day’s supply.
The fix is to automate the decision. Choose a behavior ahead of time and follow that pre-planned routine when the inflection point arrives. No fresh willpower needed — the decision was already made. That’s an implementation intention: “When X happens, I will do Y.”

✍️ Writing prompts
Beginner — Spot your keystone. Look at your school week. If you could improve ONE habit that you suspect would improve everything else (energy, focus, mood, grades), what would it be? Write it and one way it would ripple outward. Principle tested: Keystone Habit Spotting.
Intermediate — Find your inflection point. Willpower runs out somewhere. Identify your biggest inflection point during the school week — the exact moment where your discipline collapses (after dinner? after the afternoon slump? study time?). Write one pre-planned response: When [situation] happens, I will [specific action]. Principle tested: Implementation Intention.
Advanced — Engineer your keystone. Take the keystone you spotted and design a keystone system: what’s the smallest version of it you could start with, when exactly will it happen, and what will it automatically trigger downstream? Then name the inflection point that would kill it and build a pre-planned fail-safe. Principle tested: Keystone Habit Spotting + Implementation Intention.
🏁 Weekend exercise
The Two-Week Bet. Pick one small keystone habit you can do in under 5 minutes every day. Write the If-Then: “When [time/trigger] happens, I will [action].” Now bet on it: commit to 14 days, and pre-decide the response to the three most likely slip-ups in advance (what you’ll do when you’re tired / busy / forget). Track daily — this is the muscle-building lab of the course.
